Korean dishes use varied ingredients and seasonings, and the same menu can be prepared differently from one restaurant to another. If you have an allergy, religious restriction or health-related diet, write a short note and check the dish, broth, sauce and cooking tools in that order.
Prepare a short restriction note
Save your allergens and the seriousness of a reaction in Korean and English on your phone. Separate ingredients that must be avoided from preferences. Show the note before ordering, not after the food arrives.
Ask about ingredients and broth
Stews, noodles, stir-fries and fried foods may contain hidden broth, sauces, seafood, sesame, peanuts or wheat. Do not rely on a menu photo. Ask about the base, toppings and seasoning, and choose another dish when the answer is unclear.
Check cross-contact
Ask whether the same pan, board, tongs or frying oil is shared. For a serious allergy, simply removing an ingredient may not be enough. If staff cannot confirm safety, do not force the order.
Confirm at the counter and at the table
Even with a kiosk or order slip, check that staff received the restriction. When the dish arrives, inspect sauces and side dishes. Stop before eating if something differs from what was explained.
Carry a safe backup
Keep labelled packaged food and water for places or late hours with fewer choices. Save an easy-to-communicate restaurant, supermarket and pharmacy near your accommodation.
Put symptoms before the itinerary
Use prescribed emergency medicine as directed. If symptoms are serious or worsening, call 119 or seek emergency medical care. Keep your allergy and medication information, insurance contact and emergency details easy to show.
