Unlike in the United States and some European countries, adding a tip to every service is not the standard in Korea. Some shops or apps may show an optional tip screen, so read the receipt and choose only what you understand.
Separate the price, service charge and tip
Look at the menu or payment screen for the total, service charge and tip separately. If wording is unclear, ask what is included before paying twice for the same thing.
Start with the listed price at restaurants
At most ordinary restaurants and cafés, pay the listed price plus any clearly stated tax or extra charge. A tip is usually not required, even when the service is friendly; a thank-you is often enough.
Use the meter or app total for taxis
Pay the meter amount or the amount shown in the taxi app. Extra help with luggage or directions does not normally require a tip. Check the receipt for separate tolls, airport fees or booking charges.
Check the hotel’s service policy
Ask whether cleaning, room service, luggage storage or special requests have separate charges. If someone asks about a tip, ask which payment methods work and enter an amount only if you choose to.
Do not panic at an optional tip screen
A percentage shown first on a kiosk or card terminal may still be optional. Look for no tip, skip or custom options. If a fee and tip appear together, ask the staff to explain each one.
Keep the receipt if something looks wrong
If the total is higher than expected, keep the receipt, shop name, time and payment details and ask the shop first. Use a translation app to review the line items; a card dispute is a last resort.
