Free public Wi‑Fi is available in many Korean airports, subway and train stations and some bus stops. It is convenient, but a network name alone does not prove that a connection is safe. Use public Wi‑Fi for light tasks such as maps and translation, and keep accounts, payments and sensitive documents on mobile data or another trusted connection.
Confirm the place and official network first
Before connecting at an airport, station, tourist information centre or café, read the on-site guidance and compare the network name with the facility’s instructions. If several similar names appear, ask staff rather than choosing the strongest signal. A browser login screen is not automatically proof that the network is official.
Prepare updates and a screen lock
Update your phone, browser and essential apps before departure. Turn on a screen lock and device-finding feature. Do not install an app or dismiss a security warning in a hurry just because a public network asks you to complete a step.
Avoid sensitive tasks on an open network
Avoid banking, entering card details, uploading passport or booking documents and changing important passwords on public Wi‑Fi. HTTPS helps but does not remove every risk. Switch to mobile data or a trusted personal hotspot for sensitive work.
Check addresses on sign-in and message screens
After connecting, check the web address of any captive portal or message link. Stop if a free network asks for card information, an email password or a remote-control app. Verify the service through the venue or its official website instead.
Keep a backup connection
Coverage and free Wi‑Fi can be inconsistent underground or on rural, island and coastal trips. Choose an eSIM, SIM, roaming plan or pocket Wi‑Fi as your basic connection for maps, translation and bookings, and treat public Wi‑Fi as a useful supplement. Some 1330 online call options also require Wi‑Fi.
Clean up after using a shared network
Turn off auto-join and consider removing a saved public network after you leave. Log out on shared devices and check booking, payment and account alerts for anything unusual.
