The most useful bag is not the fullest one. Pack around the weather, the walking you expect to do and the things you can easily buy or wash after arrival.
Use the forecast just before departure
Temperatures can feel different in the morning, at night and indoors. Check the forecast for the cities you will visit shortly before leaving, then bring layers and one light outer piece rather than relying only on a monthly average.
Choose shoes and a day bag for walking
Station exits, hills and market streets can add more walking than expected. Wear shoes already comfortable for you and choose a bag that still feels light with water and a small umbrella inside.
Pack for one laundry stop
You do not need an outfit for every day if your accommodation or a nearby laundromat is available. Fast-drying basics and a small bag for damp clothing make a lighter suitcase easier to manage.
Keep the first day in your carry-on
Keep travel documents, payment methods, a charger, basic toiletries and one light change of clothes with you. Check your airline’s current rules for liquids, batteries and electronic devices before departure.
Leave room for things bought locally
Convenience stores, supermarkets and pharmacies can cover many everyday needs. Leave some space for snacks or souvenirs, and review your return flight’s baggage allowance before you shop.
