Dining alone in Korea

Choosing a restaurant, ordering and waiting comfortably.

Dining alone is ordinary in Korea. A quick check of the menu and the restaurant’s flow makes it easier.

Choose a solo-friendly place

Many snack shops, soup restaurants, noodle places, rice-bowl shops and cafés work well for one person. Check the menu and seating.

Confirm ordering and minimums

Counter, table and kiosk ordering all exist. Some shared dishes have a minimum; say you are one person or show a translation.

Follow the waiting flow

Lunch and dinner may use a list, ticket or screen. A small seat may be offered; follow staff guidance.

Notice self-service items

Water, side dishes and utensils may be at a self-service station. Take only what you need and ask about allergens before ordering.

Finish payment simply

Many places take payment at the counter. Tipping is not generally expected; avoid holding a busy table after eating.
