Losing a phone, wallet, passport or small bag can derail a trip. The first move is not to contact every organisation at once, but to narrow the last confirmed place and transport. Write down time, location and identifying details, then use the operator’s official channel and the police lost-property system in the right order.
Protect safety and accounts first
If a phone or wallet is missing, use another device to check a carrier block, card freeze and financial-app security. For a lost passport, prepare a copy or photo and accommodation contact, and separate a police report from contacting your consulate. Do not return to an unsafe place; contact 112 if theft or immediate danger is suspected.
Write the last known route in time order
Instead of saying you lost it in Seoul, list the date, approximate time, station and exit, train, bus or taxi, and where you got off. Prepare colour, brand, case, sticker and contents, plus a reachable contact number. Map history, payment records and photo timestamps can help reconstruct the route.
Match the report to the transport or venue
For a subway or bus, check the operator’s lost-property channel. For a taxi, look for the receipt, ride history or vehicle details first. An item in an airport terminal may belong to the airport lost-and-found office, while an item on a plane, airport railway or bus may belong to the airline or operator. When the place is uncertain, check the police Lost112 system for found items and reporting guidance.
Give confirmed facts and keep the reference number
When reporting online or by phone, start with confirmed time and location rather than guesses. Save the item description, last place, contact number, preferred return method and any case or reference number. Never post passport numbers, card numbers or device passcodes on a public board; use the official secure process.
Airport responsibility depends on the area and item
At Incheon Airport, responsibility can differ between public terminal areas, aircraft, airport railway, buses and secure areas. State the terminal and exact area. For an item left on a flight, contact the airline’s lost-and-found desk first. If departure is close, check official contacts, collection hours and proxy or delivery conditions immediately.
Verify identity and collection after a match
If someone says the item was found, confirm its description, storage place, opening hours, ID requirements, deadline and delivery option. For proxy collection, ask what authorisation is needed. Verify any payment link or bank request through the official contact, and ask about storage limits or overseas delivery if you are leaving Korea.
